Updated · 3 episodes · 1 show · 3 source notes
Overview
阎显 / Yan Xian is the Yan-family outer-relative leader whose current profile now covers both rise and defeat in the 125 CE Shun restoration crisis. Hanji 802 shows him using Emperor An’s hidden death to install Beixiang Hou Liu Yi and purge old networks; Hanji 803 shows his failed counterattack after Beixiang Hou dies; Hanji 804 shows his execution after Liu Bao is restored.
Current Profile
Hanji 802 supplies Yan Xian’s power-taking layer. After Emperor An dies on tour, Yan Xian joins Yan Hou and Fan Feng in concealing the death and returning to Luoyang before officials can rally around Liu Bao. Once Yan Hou becomes dowager, Yan Xian is appointed chariot cavalry general and helps choose the young Beixiang Hou as emperor.
The same source shows Yan Xian’s first purge. He fears Geng Bao because Grand General prestige and old An-era influence threaten the Yan family’s new monopoly. Yan Xian then has Geng Bao, Fan Feng, Xie Yun, Zhou Guang, Wang Sheng, and others accused; Fan Feng and others are executed, Geng Bao is demoted and kills himself, and Wang Sheng is exiled. Yan Xian also places Yan brothers in key posts, making the family monopoly explicit.
Hanji 803 shows Yan Xian after the Yan settlement starts to fail. After Liu Yi becomes gravely ill, Sun Cheng names Yan Xian as one of the figures who would need to be removed for Liu Bao’s restoration to succeed. Once Liu Yi dies and Sun Cheng’s group enthrones Liu Bao, Yan Xian tries to counter through Yan Taihou’s authority, Feng Shi, Yan Chong, and bounty promises for anyone who captures Liu Bao or Li Run. Feng Shi refuses, Guo Zhen captures Yan Xian’s brother Yan Jin, and the Yan recovery path collapses before dawn.
Hanji 804 presents the post-victory liquidation. After Liu Bao is installed at Jiade Hall, Yan Xian and his brothers are arrested and executed, while the wider family is exiled and Yan Taihou is moved to a detached palace. The source uses Yan Xian’s defeat to mark the transition from anti-Yan enemy pressure to the reward and hierarchy problems inside Sun Cheng’s eunuch merit group.
