严延年 / Yan Yannian (Western Han)
Updated · 2 episodes · 1 show · 2 source notes
Overview
严延年 / Yan Yannian enters the wiki through Hanji 448 as a Western Han cruel official whose governing skill is inseparable from fear. Hanji 447 now supplies the setup: before the fatal accusation, Yan is already known for legal skill, secret judgment writing, concentrated winter executions, and the “屠伯” reputation.
Current Profile
Yan Yannian’s profile is now coherent across setup and downfall. He is remembered as a “屠伯” type: powerful, intimidating, and good at writing judgments that make targets difficult to defend. Hanji 447 stresses that this capacity has a public-order side: he targets豪强 who injure weaker people and knows the law well enough to make rulings appear technically sound. The same source says the capacity is already corrupted by secrecy, mass killing, and private intention.
That competence does not become stable authority. Hanji 447 contrasts Yan with 黄霸, whose lenient 颍川郡 governance attracts people away from harsh Henan rule and wins 汉宣帝’s reward. After Xuan later cancels an expected Zuo Fengyi appointment because of Yan’s cruel reputation, Yan resents the court and handles a Henan locust crisis with contemptuous indifference.
The fall begins inside his own office. A府丞 who had once been favored by Yan fears that Yan’s harshness will eventually turn on him. He therefore travels to Chang’an, files a ten-count accusation, and kills himself with poison to prevent the case from being dismissed as ordinary insubordination. The accusations are not all proven, but enough resentment and political-slander evidence remains for Xuan to order punishment; Yan is executed by public beheading.
The episode makes Yan’s mother a moral witness. She sees his killing-based reputation before his death, refuses to celebrate his office, tells him that a governor should use humane teaching rather than power-backed killing, and prepares a grave for him before the punishment arrives. The page therefore treats Yan less as an isolated bad official than as a case of 恐怖治理反噬.
Key Characteristics
- Western Han official identified with the “cruel official” tradition and remembered for severe punishments and mass executions.
- Legally skilled local administrator who can punish powerful offenders but turns difficult-to-challenge rulings toward intimidation.
- Administrator whose harshness makes even favored subordinates feel unsafe.
- Rival contrast to Huang Ba’s humane Yingchuan governance and omen-backed local success.
- Neglectful crisis actor in the Henan locust episode after a blocked promotion leaves him resentful.
- Target of a self-sacrificial subordinate accusation that turns internal fear into court exposure.
Evidence
Cruel-official profile:
- Hanji 447 says Yan personally writes judgments, keeps even close officials from knowing his intent in advance, and makes technically difficult-to-challenge cases.
- Hanji 447 says winter prisoner concentration and mass executions in Henan give him the “屠伯” reputation.
- Hanji 448 calls Yan Yannian a “屠伯” and says he often sentenced people to death.
- Hanji 448 says his judgment writing was strong enough that accused people found it difficult to defend themselves.
Huang Ba contrast and resentment:
- Hanji 447 contrasts Yan’s fear-based Henan rule with Huang Ba’s lenient Yingchuan governance, crime reduction, and population attraction.
- Hanji 447 says Yan looks down on Huang Ba’s old blemish and resents Huang’s first receipt of imperial reward and promotion.
Promotion disappointment and locust neglect:
- Hanji 448 says Xuan nearly appoints Yan as Zuo Fengyi but withdraws the order because of his cruel-official reputation.
- Hanji 448 says Yan treats the Henan locust disaster lightly and leaves the response to a府丞.
Accusation and execution:
- Hanji 448 says the府丞 fears Yan despite earlier favor and files a ten-count accusation before poisoning himself.
- Hanji 448 says the court investigation does not prove every count, but establishes key resentment and political-slander charges.
- Hanji 448 says Yan is sentenced to public execution in the marketplace.
Maternal warning:
- Hanji 448 says Yan’s mother criticizes him for using power to kill rather than governing through benevolent teaching.
- Hanji 448 says she prepares a grave in advance because she expects his violent conduct to bring punishment.
Qualifications
This page is source-scoped to Hanji 447 and Hanji 448. It does not reconstruct Yan Yannian’s whole career, the original legal text of the ten accusations, the exact evidentiary threshold for the resentment charge, or the full list of his punishments. Hanji 447’s claim that Yan punishes豪强 who injure the weak prevents a flat caricature: his legal ability and public-order role are real in the source. The institutional mechanism preserved here is narrower than retribution language: cruel governance made subordinates afraid enough to expose him and made Xuan unwilling to promote or protect him.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 447’s setup: legal skill, secret rulings, mass executions, Huang Ba contrast, and resentment before the downfall.
- Preserved Hanji 448’s end-state synthesis around internal fear, disaster neglect, maternal warning, and public execution.
Relationships
- 汉宣帝 - ruler who cancels Yan’s expected promotion and later orders investigation after the self-killing accusation.
- 黄霸 - local-governance contrast whose humane Yingchuan success exposes the limits of Yan’s fear-based rule.
- 恐怖治理反噬 - concept illustrated by Yan’s conversion of subordinate fear into fatal exposure.
- 政治诛杀过度 - contrast because Yan’s case is presented as deserved punishment rather than a proportionality blemish like Han Yanshou or Yang Yun.
- 韩延寿 - contrasting Western Han local official whose public affection and procedural case complicate Xuan-era punishment.
- 民心型政治安全 - inverse relationship because Yan relies on fear rather than popular trust.
