邺城 / Ye (Late Han)
Overview
邺城 / Ye (Late Han) is 袁绍’s Jizhou headquarters city in the wiki, first appearing as the seat transferred from 韩馥, later threatened by Wei Commandery and Black Mountain violence, and in Hanji 1061-1063 becoming 曹操’s siege target and final breach point during the Yuan-family succession collapse.
Current Profile
Ye’s current profile has three linked functions. It is first Yuan Shao’s Jizhou seat, acquired after Han Fu sends the seal ribbon and Yuan Shao’s troops reach the city. That handover is not frictionless: clearer Han Fu subordinates leave, and 耿武 with 闵纯 die trying to resist it.
Ye is also a headquarters whose vulnerability includes households and officials’ families. During the 魏郡 revolt, Wei commandery soldiers and 余毒’s 黑山军 attack the city, and Yuan Shao’s followers panic because many families are inside. 陶生 prevents a household disaster by entering from the western side, shutting the gate, protecting Yuan Shao’s family and state officials’ families, and escorting them to Chiqiu.
The latest layer makes Ye the focal point of Cao Cao’s intervention in the Yuan succession collapse. 袁尚 retreats toward Ye when Cao advances, later leaves 审配 and 苏由 to defend it while he attacks 袁谭 again, and Cao surrounds the city with earth hills and tunnels. The surrounding campaign also clears grain-route threats and repairs water transport, making Ye a siege target tied to logistics, internal response, and perimeter control.
Hanji 1062 extends the siege from initial works into full isolation. Cao Cao abandons the earth-hill and tunnel approach, opens a long moat, lets the first shallow appearance lull Shen Pei, and then deepens the trench overnight. He diverts Zhang River water into it, cutting the city off from news and food. 李孚 briefly breaks that information barrier by posing as a Cao-side command inspector, reaching the wall, and delivering Yuan Shang’s message before escaping among old and weak people sent out under white flags.
Hanji 1063 completes the Ye arc. Yuan Shang approaches from the western mountain route and coordinates by torch signal, but Cao Cao prevents Shen Pei’s internal response and breaks the outside relief force. Cao then shows Yuan Shang’s captured official and personal goods to Ye’s defenders, turning the rescue failure into visible morale evidence. Shen Pei keeps resisting, even nearly killing Cao with hidden crossbowmen, but the city falls after 审荣 opens the east gate at night.
Hanji 1115 extends Ye beyond transfer, household-security crisis, and siege target into a Cao-side political center. The episode places 铜雀台 there after northern consolidation and reads the monument as a display of 曹操’s achievements and authority. This does not erase the city’s Yuan history; it shows how conquest changes the same urban site from an inherited headquarters into a stage for the victor’s political memory.
Key Characteristics
- Yuan Shao’s late-Han Jizhou seat, acquired through Han Fu’s handover.
- Headquarters whose political meaning includes family and official-household security, not only walls.
- Repeatedly appears when Yuan power is vulnerable to internal or nearby revolt.
- Becomes the Yuan-family capital target that Cao Cao can attack once Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang split.
- In Hanji 1061-1063, its siege depends on internal response attempts, siege works, river logistics, moat-and-water isolation, communication-breakthrough attempts, morale proof, and insider gate control.
- After the siege arc, becomes a Cao-side monumental center where Tongque Platform projects conquest into political memory.
Evidence
- Jizhou seat transfer: Hanji 956 places Ye at the center of Yuan Shao’s takeover after Han Fu yields the seal ribbon.
- Household vulnerability: Hanji 970 shows panic at Ye because Yuan Shao’s family and officials’ families are inside during the Wei Commandery and Black Mountain attack.
- Rescue and removal: Hanji 970 credits Tao Sheng with protecting those households and escorting them to Chiqiu.
- Cao Cao’s siege target: Hanji 1061 shows Yuan Shang leaving Shen Pei and Su You to defend Ye, Su You’s exposed insider plot, and Cao Cao surrounding the city with earth hills and tunnels.
- Logistics and perimeter: Hanji 1061 links the Ye campaign to water-transport repairs, Maocheng grain-route protection, Handan, and county surrender signals.
- Moat-and-water isolation: Hanji 1062 says Cao Cao replaces tunnels with a deep moat, diverts Zhang River water into it, and cuts Ye off from outside supply and information.
- Messenger breach: Hanji 1062 says Li Fu enters Ye by posing as a Cao-side
duduand later escapes in the crowd of old and weak civilians released under white flags. - Failed outside relief: Hanji 1063 says Yuan Shang approaches Ye by the western mountain route, coordinates with Shen Pei by torch signal, but is isolated and driven into flight after Cao blocks Shen Pei’s sortie.
- Morale proof and breach: Hanji 1063 has Cao display Yuan Shang’s captured goods to Ye defenders before Shen Rong opens the east gate to Cao’s army.
- Household violence at fall: Hanji 1063 says Xin Ping finds his family already killed in Ye after the city breaks.
- Post-conquest monumental center: Hanji 1115 places Tongque Platform at Ye and interprets it as a public display of Cao Cao’s northern achievement and authority.
Qualifications
This page is a late-Han Ye route, kept separate from 邺城 / Ye (Warring States). The Hanji 1061-1063 campaign details are drawn from podcast transcripts and should be treated as source-scoped where minor local names, waterworks, troop counts, or exact engineering details depend on transcript accuracy. Hanji 1062 renders the city as “夜城”; the wiki normalizes to 邺城 based on the surrounding Yuan-family siege sequence. Hanji 1115’s construction date, bronze-bird naming tradition, and architectural details also require direct historical corroboration.
What Changed
- Extended Ye’s siege profile from water isolation into final relief failure, defender morale pressure, Shen Rong’s east-gate opening, and post-breach capture of Shen Pei.
- Reframed Ye as a campaign setting where physical isolation, information control, and insider gate control converge.
- Added the Xin Ping family-killing detail as a household-security consequence of Ye’s fall.
- Extended Ye from Yuan headquarters and siege target into Cao Cao’s post-conquest monumental center.
- Added Tongque Platform as the built expression of that political transition.
Relationships
- 袁绍 - powerholder whose Jizhou headquarters Ye becomes.
- 韩馥 - predecessor whose handover transfers Ye to Yuan Shao.
- 冀州 - provincial setting for Ye’s political weight.
- 魏郡 - revolt setting that makes Ye vulnerable in Hanji 970.
- 黑山军 - armed pressure connected to the attack on Ye.
- 陶生 - rescuer who protects Yuan-family and official households in Hanji 970.
- 袁尚 - claimant whose decisions expose Ye to Cao Cao’s siege.
- 袁谭 - rival whose pressure helps make Ye the target.
- 审配 - defender left at Ye.
- 苏由 - defender whose insider plot fails and who flees to Cao.
- 李孚 - messenger who briefly breaks Ye’s information isolation.
- 审荣 - east-gate commandant whose opening of the gate lets Cao’s army enter.
- 辛评 - Yuan-side figure whose family is killed in Ye before the city falls.
- 曹操 - besieger who makes Ye the center of the Yuan-collapse campaign.
- 铜雀台 - post-conquest monument that projects Cao Cao’s authority from Ye.
- 曹洪 - officer left to continue the siege while Cao clears surrounding threats.

- 战利品实证瓦解士气 - concept grounded by Cao’s display of Yuan Shang’s captured goods to Ye defenders.
- 归师勿遏式追击风险 - concept sharpened by Cao’s decision to attack Yuan Shang’s relief force outside Ye.
- 邺城 / Ye (Warring States) - same broad place name in an earlier period, kept separate to avoid route collision.
