黄巾军 / Yellow Turbans (late Han)

Hanji 922 supplies the pre-rebellion social-religious layer before Yellow Turban identity appears as an open military emergency. 张角’s 太平道 grows through healing, confession, and discipleship under conditions where many ordinary people need practical relief.

The episode’s value for this page is timing. Local officials initially see the movement as moral teaching rather than a coordinated revolt, so the mass base can expand across eight provinces before Hanji 923 adds the thirty-six fang, palace contacts, disclosure, and early launch.

Hanji 923 supplies the pre-outbreak organization layer for the Yellow Turbans. Before the open 184 CE emergency, 张角’s 太平道 grows through healing and popular distress, divides into thirty-six fang, marks “甲子” on official gates, and prepares coordinated action through figures such as 马元义.

The same source shows the acceleration mechanism. 唐周 discloses the plot, Ma Yuanyi is executed, and the court kills more than 1,000 believers in the episode’s account; Zhang Jiao then notifies leaders and launches early. That makes Hanji 924’s emergency response a reaction to a movement whose religious, local, and palace-contact layers were already built.

Hanji 925 supplies the first 184 CE battlefield layer currently on this page. 波才 defeats 朱儁 before 皇甫嵩 turns the fight at 长社 through retreat, fatigue, and fire attack.

The episode stresses that the Yellow Turbans’ lack of formal training does not make them harmless. Runan rebels defeat Zhao Qian at Shaoling, Guangyang rebels kill Guo Xun and Liu Wei, and Bo Cai’s force is brave enough to expose Han infantry weakness before Huangfu Song’s design breaks it.

Hanji 927 adds an internal-root warning layer. 傅燮 argues that the Yellow Turban rising is a surface crisis whose deeper cause lies inside 汉灵帝’s eunuch-dominated court. The movement therefore enters this source not only as a battlefield enemy, but as evidence of 君臣反馈失灵.

The same episode also adds the first Nanyang branch before Hanji 930. 张曼成 kills Nanyang administrator Chu Gong and holds the field for more than 100 days before 秦颉 attacks and kills him, leaving a remnant force that later elects 赵弘.

Hanji 928 supplies the immediate 184 CE campaign layer before Hanji 929’s main-force suppression. 皇甫嵩 and 朱儁 defeat Yellow Turban forces in the Runan-陈国 field, while 卢植 drives 张角 back into Guangzong.

The source also shows how court politics interrupts military pressure on the movement. Lu Zhi’s siege appears close to success, but 左丰’s inspection report leads 汉灵帝 to recall him and appoint 董卓 instead. This creates the setup for Hanji 929’s replacement-command failure before Huangfu Song later breaks the main Yellow Turban forces.

Hanji 929 supplies the main-force suppression layer for the Yellow Turbans in 184 CE. 皇甫嵩 defeats them at Cangting, then destroys the Guangzong and Quyang branches by killing 张梁 and 张宝 after 张角 has already died.

The episode says the main uprising is basically pacified after the Quyang victory, but it keeps a long afterlife visible: local and regional remnants continue until 曹操 finally settles them in 192 CE. This gives the page a distinction between the collapse of Zhang Jiao’s core movement and the persistence of Yellow Turban successor fields.

Hanji 930 adds a Nanyang campaign branch for the Yellow Turbans after 张曼成 has been killed. The remnant force elects 赵弘, grows again to more than 100,000 people, and resists 朱儁 and 许秋 for months before Zhu Jun kills Zhao Hong.

The same source then follows successive leaders 韩忠 and 孙夏. Zhu Jun’s campaign becomes a study in both coercion and morale: rejecting surrender may deter revolt, but a closed encirclement can make rebels fight to the death, so Zhu Jun opens a route and attacks once the force begins looking for survival.

This page covers the broad late-Han Yellow Turban movement field as it appears in Hanji 930. It remains distinct from later or regional successor pages such as 青州黄巾军, 白波军, and 黑山军.
