幽州 / Youzhou (Late Han)
Hanji 906 backfills Youzhou before the Zhang Chun, Liu Yu, and Gongsun Zan branches. 蔡邕 says the province was known for armor and cavalry, but recent war and famine have exhausted resources; the inspector post still remains hard to fill because 三互法任官限制 narrows the eligible pool. The same annal field notes 鲜卑 pressure, making the vacancy a governance-capacity problem rather than a routine personnel delay.
Hanji 938 supplies the rebellion origin before the later Liu Yu response. Wuhuan cavalry recruited for 张温’s campaign desert after supply and pay failure near Ji, while 张纯, 张举, and 丘力居 kill frontier officials and convert Youzhou disorder into a direct challenge to 汉灵帝.
Hanji 939 adds the appointment prehistory before Liu Yu’s pacification. Under 刘焉’s provincial-shepherd reform, 刘虞 is sent as Youzhou shepherd to deal with 张纯, while the court’s requisition of 南匈奴 support for that campaign triggers 边疆征发反噬.
Hanji 942 backfills Youzhou before the Liu Yu/Gongsun Zan rupture. The province is destabilized by 张举, 张纯, 丘力居, and frontier raids, while 公孙瓒’s Shimen victory turns into overextension and siege at Guanzi City.
The same episode makes 刘虞’s arrival a temporary stabilization point. His envoys, rewards, and surrender signaling induce 乌桓 and 鲜卑 actors to submit or disperse, but leaving Gongsun Zan with cavalry at 右北平 preserves the split between pacification and armed suppression.
Hanji 972 later makes Youzhou the northern region where Liu Yu and Gongsun Zan move from uneasy coexistence into open rupture. Liu Yu’s humane but non-executable attack, his retreat to 居庸关, and Gongsun Zan’s marketplace execution of Liu Yu and his family create the region’s later legitimacy wound.
Hanji 998 follows Youzhou as the northern region Gongsun Zan controls after killing Liu Yu. The episode’s main Youzhou pattern is that conquest without people-support becomes hard to hold.
Once 鲜于辅, 阎柔, 乌桓, 鲜卑, 刘和, and 袁绍-aligned forces attack, several Youzhou commandery-level actors kill Gongsun Zan’s officials and join the coalition. Youzhou therefore appears as a regional legitimacy and defection field, not only as Gongsun Zan’s territory.
