袁尚 / Yuan Shang
Overview
袁尚 is presented as the favored but contested son of 袁绍. His bounded wiki profile now begins with Hanji 1056’s fast installation after Yuan Shao dies without a public heir, then follows his rivalry with 袁谭 as it moves from tense cooperation under 曹操’s attack into open conflict and a strategic opening for Cao.
Current Profile
Hanji 1056 gives Yuan Shang’s origin as successor claimant. Yuan Shao prefers him privately, with support from Yuan Shao’s later wife Liu, but does not make the choice public. When Yuan Shao dies, many people initially expect Yuan Tan to succeed because he is the eldest son. 审配 and 逢纪 fear retaliation from Yuan Tan’s allies, so they claim Yuan Shao left instructions and install Yuan Shang before Yuan Tan returns for mourning.
The same episode presents Yuan Shang as both successor and still-dependent claimant. He restricts Yuan Tan’s troops and sends Feng Ji to supervise him, which helps trigger Yuan Tan’s killing of Feng Ji. Yet Yuan Shang cannot ignore the common external threat: when Cao Cao attacks Yuan Tan at 黎阳, Yuan Shang leaves Shen Pei to guard 邺城 and personally reinforces Yuan Tan. After several inconclusive battles, the brothers retreat and burn their camps.
Hanji 1056 also shows Yuan Shang trying to widen the war. He sends 郭援 / 郭元 to join 高干 and the 南匈奴 against 河东郡, and seeks 马腾’s support in Guanzhong. That line weakens when 傅干 persuades Ma Teng to help Cao-side 钟繇 instead.
Hanji 1058 then frames Yuan Shang through the instability left by Yuan Shao’s non-designation. 郭嘉 tells Cao Cao that Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang still have enough comparable backing to cooperate when pressured by an outside enemy, but that they will fight if that pressure relaxes. The later dispute over armor confirms the prediction: Yuan Shang suspects Yuan Tan’s anti-Cao pursuit request will be turned against him, refuses, and defeats Yuan Tan outside Ye.
Hanji 1059 adds Liu Biao’s attempt to pull Yuan Shang back from escalation. 刘表 flatters Yuan Shang as the more magnanimous brother and urges him to absorb Yuan Tan’s faults so the two can defeat Cao Cao together. The warning fails, leaving Yuan Shang’s pressure on Yuan Tan as the condition that brings Xin Pi to Cao Cao.
Key Characteristics
- Favored younger son whose claim depends on private preference and factional installation rather than a clear public succession settlement.
- Successor claimant backed by Shen Pei and Feng Ji before Yuan Tan can return to Ye.
- Rival of Yuan Tan, with enough force and support to make the conflict strategically meaningful for Cao Cao.
- Capable of temporary anti-Cao cooperation with Yuan Tan while external pressure is direct.
- Attempts to widen the anti-Cao field through Guo Yuan, Gao Gan, the Southern Xiongnu, and Ma Teng.
- Suspicious of Yuan Tan’s military requests, treating an anti-Cao pursuit proposal as a possible threat to himself.
- Target of Liu Biao’s self-interested mediation, which asks him to subordinate personal rivalry to anti-Cao coalition logic.
Evidence
- Private preference and factional installation: Hanji 1056 says Yuan Shao favors Yuan Shang but leaves no public will, after which Shen Pei and Feng Ji install Yuan Shang through a claimed final order.
- Yuan Tan grievance: Hanji 1056 shows Yuan Shang giving Yuan Tan few troops and sending Feng Ji to supervise him, helping turn succession resentment into violence.
- Cooperation under pressure: Hanji 1056 records Yuan Shang leaving Shen Pei at Ye and personally rescuing Yuan Tan when Cao Cao attacks Liyang.
- Western pressure plan: Hanji 1056 has Yuan Shang send Guo Yuan toward Hedong with Gao Gan and Southern Xiongnu support while also courting Ma Teng.
- Pressure-sensitive split: Hanji 1058 uses Guo Jia’s advice to show that the brothers cooperate under Cao Cao’s pressure but split when pressure eases.
- Open conflict: Hanji 1058 narrates Yuan Shang refusing Yuan Tan’s armor request, defeating Yuan Tan outside Ye, and later besieging him at Pingyuan.
- Failed mediation: Hanji 1059 records Liu Biao’s letter urging Yuan Shang to tolerate Yuan Tan and unite against Cao Cao, while the brothers do not accept the warning.
Qualifications
This page currently rests on three adjacent source notes and should not be treated as a complete biography of Yuan Shang. The episodes emphasize how Yuan Shang functions inside the Yuan-family succession breakdown rather than his full administrative or military career. Hanji 1056 gives the strongest claim that his succession was factionally engineered, but the page keeps motive claims about Shen Pei and Feng Ji bounded to that source’s account.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 1056’s origin layer for Yuan Shang’s succession: private preference, claimed last order, and installation by Shen Pei and Feng Ji.
- Added the first Yuan Tan conflict sequence, including troop restriction, Feng Ji’s supervision, and Yuan Shang’s later rescue of Yuan Tan under Cao Cao’s attack.
- Added Yuan Shang’s western pressure plan through Guo Yuan, Gao Gan, the Southern Xiongnu, and Ma Teng.
Relationships
- 袁绍 - father whose non-designation leaves Yuan Shang’s claim exposed to rivalry.
- 袁谭 - brother and direct rival in the post-Yuan Shao conflict.
- 审配 - supporter who helps install Yuan Shang and guards Ye while Yuan Shang rescues Yuan Tan.
- 逢纪 - supporter sent to supervise Yuan Tan before Yuan Tan kills him.
- 郭援 / 郭元 - commander Yuan Shang sends west to pressure Cao Cao through Hedong.
- 高干 - Yuan-family relative and Bingzhou-side participant in Yuan Shang’s western pressure plan.
- 马腾 - western leader Yuan Shang tries to recruit before Fu Gan redirects him.
- 刘表 - outside mediator who urges Yuan Shang to reconcile with Yuan Tan against Cao Cao.
- 郭嘉 - strategist who predicts that Yuan Shang and Yuan Tan will fight if Cao Cao reduces pressure.
- 曹操 - outside enemy whose pressure and withdrawal shape the brothers’ incentives.
- 黎阳 - campaign setting in which Yuan Shang reinforces Yuan Tan against Cao Cao.
- 邺城 - Yuan-family base near which Yuan Shang defeats Yuan Tan.
- 未定继承人风险 - conceptual pattern explaining why Yuan Shang’s claim becomes unstable.
- 撤压诱发内斗 - strategic pattern that turns Yuan Shang’s rivalry with Yuan Tan into an exploitable fault line.
- 两败俱伤、旁人得利 - warning pattern Liu Biao uses to describe the cost of Yuan Shang and Yuan Tan’s continued fighting.
