岳钟琪 / Yue Zhongqi

岳钟琪 / Yue Zhongqi is the Sichuan-Shaanxi governor-general targeted by 张熙 in 11.雍正王朝之大义觉迷:史景迁笔下的千古奇案. The anti-Qing letter addressed him as a military savior and tried to activate his status as a Han general and supposed descendant of Yue Fei.

The episode treats Yue’s response as official self-preservation under a dangerous court climate. He had served under 年羹尧, held a post associated with recent purges, and knew that mishandling the letter could implicate him. He therefore involved Manchu witnesses, interrogated Zhang Xi, used deception to expand the confession, and reported carefully to 雍正 through secret memorials.

Yue’s later fate also matters: despite his loyal conduct in the case, he remained vulnerable to suspicion, was later punished, and was only reused when 乾隆 needed military competence. The source uses this to show that loyalty under personal rule did not remove exposure.
