虞姬 / Yu Ji

虞姬 / Yu Ji enters the wiki through Hanji 168 part 1 as the favored woman with 项羽 during the night after the 垓下之战. The episode follows the 《史记》 scene in which Xiang Yu drinks at night, hears 四面楚歌, sees that the military situation is lost, and turns his despair toward 《垓下歌》.

The source does not develop Yu Ji as a broad biography. Its interest is the final dilemma. Xiang Yu cannot keep a siege position, cannot safely take Yu Ji in a breakout, and cannot accept leaving her to Han forces. The host reads his repeated “奈若何” as the moment when military defeat becomes a private problem he cannot solve directly.

Yu Ji’s suicide is therefore treated as action rather than decoration. The episode argues that she understands Xiang Yu’s meaning and chooses death without hesitation, even while asking whether a person in that position might have felt resentment toward him. In this reading, the “霸王别姬” scene reverses expected strength: the warrior becomes emotionally unable to decide, while Yu Ji acts with severe clarity.

The source also keeps a source-critical caveat. It says later scholars have doubted the authenticity of Yu Ji’s attributed response song, but the host regards its content as fitting the situation. This page records that as source-scoped literary tradition, not as a settled textual claim.
