臧洪 / Zang Hong

臧洪 / Zang Hong enters the wiki through the Hanji 996 and Hanji 997 Zang Hong branch as a late-Han official whose loyalty is deliberately left morally double-edged. Hanji 996 gives the cause: 张超, Zang Hong’s old superior from the 广陵 period, is trapped at 雍丘 by 曹操, and Zang Hong cannot persuade 袁绍 to send rescue troops.

Hanji 996 also shows the cost before the final capture. Zang Hong holds 东郡 for more than a year, answers 陈琳’s persuasion letter by prioritizing old-master duty, and lets followers leave before the end. They stay, the city starves, and the source’s account of rats, leather, shared thin gruel, a concubine killed for soldiers’ food, and mass death turns his义气 into a 忠义牵连困境 as well as a personal honor case.

The episodes give Zang Hong the dignity of courage and old-master loyalty, but they do not leave him as a simple martyr. The host argues that Zang Hong is also serving Yuan Shao, that Yuan Shao and Cao Cao are allies, and that Zang Hong’s refusal to recognize that wider structure turns personal feeling into political catastrophe.

When Yuan Shao captures him in 195 CE, Zang Hong refuses to submit and directly condemns Yuan Shao’s conduct. Yuan Shao first wants to spare him, but Zang Hong’s continued defiance makes survival impossible in the source’s telling. His death therefore becomes a case where 士为知己者死, 死党之义与守职奉上, and 情执政治判断失衡 overlap.
