曾参 / Zeng Shen appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》57丨古代发毒誓还有这作用？ inside the parable 甘茂 tells 秦武王 before the 宜阳 campaign. In the story, Zeng Shen’s mother initially refuses to believe accusations that her son killed someone, but repeated reports eventually panic her.
The episode uses Zeng Shen less as a biographical figure than as a trust benchmark. Gan Mao says his own virtue is not equal to Zeng Shen’s and Qin Wuwang’s trust is not necessarily equal to Zeng Shen’s mother’s trust; therefore repeated accusations by more than two or three opponents could plausibly overturn the king’s confidence.
