entity

张郃 / Zhang He (late Han)

Overview

Zhang He is introduced in the wiki as a Yuan Shao general at the decisive phase of the Guandu Campaign. Hanji 1049 presents him as the commander who correctly identifies Wuchao as the urgent point to rescue, then defects to Cao Cao with Gao Lan after Guo Tu’s self-protective slander makes their position unsafe.

Current Profile

Zhang He’s defining role in the current evidence is judgment under battlefield pressure. When Cao raids Wuchao, he warns Yuan Shao that the grain depot must be saved because losing it will break the army’s material base and morale.

Yuan Shao does not act on that warning at sufficient weight, instead sending a light rescue force while committing the heavier force against Cao’s camp. After the attack fails, Guo Tu fears blame and tells Yuan Shao that Zhang He celebrated the defeat, forcing Zhang He and Gao Lan into surrender.

Cao Hong initially doubts the surrender, but Xun You argues that Zhang He defected because his correct counsel was rejected. The episode therefore presents Zhang He as both a diagnostic general inside Yuan’s command system and a prime example of Cao-side defector incorporation.

Key Characteristics

  • Yuan general who recognizes Wuchao as the decisive logistics point.
  • Correct but overruled battlefield adviser during the Guandu climax.
  • Surrenderer whose defection is triggered by intra-camp blame shifting rather than simple prior loyalty to Cao.
  • Paired with Gao Lan in burning Yuan-side equipment and entering Cao’s camp.
  • A distinct late-Han figure, disambiguated from 张鹤 / Zhang He of Zhang Chu.

Qualifications

This page currently covers Zhang He only through the Guandu-climax source. It does not yet synthesize his earlier career, later Cao-Wei service, or broader military reputation.

What Changed

  • Created a disambiguated late-Han Zhang He page rather than merging him with the existing anti-Qin Zhang He route.
  • Added Zhang He’s correct Wuchao advice, Guo Tu-induced danger, and surrender to Cao Cao.

Relationships

  • 官渡之战 - campaign setting for Zhang He’s current wiki profile.
  • 乌巢夜袭 - battlefield crisis that reveals Zhang He’s judgment.
  • 袁绍 - original commander who does not fully follow Zhang He’s advice.
  • 郭图 - adviser whose self-protective slander drives Zhang He’s defection.
  • 高览 - paired Yuan general who defects alongside Zhang He.
  • 荀攸 - Cao-side strategist who argues Zhang He’s surrender is credible.
  • 纳叛安抚式整合 - concept illustrated by Zhang He’s absorption after Guandu.
  • 张鹤 / Zhang He of Zhang Chu - separate similarly romanized figure requiring route disambiguation.
