张鲁 / Zhang Lu (Five Pecks of Rice)
Overview
张鲁 / Zhang Lu is the late-Han 五斗米道 figure whose wiki profile runs from Liu Yan’s Hanzhong route-control instrument to an autonomous religious-administrative ruler. Hanji 1053 now makes the rupture with 刘璋 explicit: Zhang Lu absorbs a fellow commander’s force, holds 汉中, and becomes a separate frontier power.
Current Profile
Hanji 959 gives Zhang Lu an early operational role inside 刘焉’s Yi Province autonomy. Zhang Lu’s family tradition and his mother’s access to Liu Yan help explain why Liu Yan appoints him and sends him with 张修 to attack Hanzhong administrator Su Gu. The Hanzhong action then supports route politics: the Yizhou side blocks the 斜谷道, kills court envoys, and lets Liu Yan claim that “rice-bandits” have cut communications with the court.
Hanji 1053 changes the Zhang Lu-Liu family relationship from delegated operation to open separation. Zhang Lu judges Liu Zhang weak, kills Zhang Xiu, absorbs Zhang Xiu’s troops, and holds Hanzhong. Liu Zhang responds by killing Zhang Lu’s mother, brothers, and family, making the break irreparable and turning Hanzhong into a frontier autonomy problem for Yi Province.
Hanji 995 uses Zhang Lu as a bounded late-Han comparator for religiously organized rule alongside 张角 and 太平道. Hanji 1055 supplies the institutional detail: Zhang Lu, as Zhang Daoling / 张道陵’s grandson, uses confession, prayer, and healing practice; appoints local “jijiu” officers; receives Yi Province refugees and local adherence; and receives nominal court accommodation as Zhenmin zhonglangjiang and Hanning administrator while offering only low-value local tribute. When a jade-seal omen leads some to urge kingship, 阎圃 warns that the title adds danger without adding substance, and Zhang Lu does not claim it.
Key Characteristics
- Combines religious authority with local administration in Hanzhong.
- Begins in the wiki as part of Liu Yan’s Hanzhong and pass-control strategy.
- Breaks from Liu Zhang by killing Zhang Xiu, absorbing troops, and holding Hanzhong separately.
- Maintains nominal Han accommodation while preserving substantial local autonomy.
- Uses Wudoumi Dao offices and healing-confession practices as social organization.
- Accepts Yan Pu’s advice that kingship would expose rather than strengthen him.
Evidence
- Hanzhong route-control role: Hanji 959 links Zhang Lu to Liu Yan’s attack on Hanzhong and the later blockage of Xiegu communications.
- Break from Liu Zhang: Hanji 1053 reports Zhang Lu’s killing of Zhang Xiu, absorption of Zhang Xiu’s troops, control of Hanzhong, and Liu Zhang’s killing of Zhang Lu’s family.
- Religious mobilization comparator: Hanji 995 uses Zhang Lu and Wudoumi Dao as a late-Han comparison for religion as an organizing medium.
- Hanzhong governance: Hanji 1055 describes Zhang Lu’s ritual-administrative order, court titles, limited tribute, and local acceptance.
- Title restraint: Hanji 1055 reports Yan Pu’s warning and Zhang Lu’s refusal to become Hanning king.
Qualifications
Zhang Lu is not treated as equivalent to 笮融. Hanji 995 uses him as a comparator for religious organization, while Hanji 1055 gives a more durable governance case. Hanji 1053 adds coercive power and family-level rupture, but the healing claims remain recorded as part of the episode’s description of belief-practice, not independently verified medical claims.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 1053 as the missing rupture layer between Liu Yan’s Hanzhong delegation and Zhang Lu’s later Hanzhong religious-administrative order.
- Clarified that Zhang Lu’s autonomy is military and familial as well as religious-administrative.
Relationships
- 五斗米道 - religious-administrative system through which Zhang Lu organizes Hanzhong.
- 刘焉 - earlier patron whose Yizhou-Hanzhong strategy uses Zhang Lu.
- 刘璋 - successor from whom Zhang Lu breaks and whose family retaliation makes the rupture permanent.
- 张修 - paired Five-Pecks actor whom Zhang Lu kills before absorbing his troops.
- 汉中 - territorial and social base of Zhang Lu’s autonomous order.
- 斜谷道 - route-control mechanism in the earlier Liu Yan branch.
- 阎圃 - adviser whose counsel blocks Zhang Lu’s proposed kingship.
- 名实相符式名号节制 - concept explaining why Zhang Lu’s real capacity does not require a royal title.
- 工具化宗教权力 - broader frame for religion as an organizing medium in late-Han politics.
