张燕 / Zhang Yan (Late Han) enters the wiki through Hanji 970 as a major 黑山军 leader in the Changshan campaign against 袁绍. The episode says Zhang Yan has tens of thousands of strong troops and thousands of horses, and that Xiongnu and Wuhuan elements are also present in the field.

Zhang Yan’s role is structural as well as military. He is the common enemy who makes Yuan Shao and 吕布 cooperate for more than ten days, but that shared campaign does not produce durable trust. After both sides withdraw exhausted, Yuan Shao’s hostility toward Lü Bu and Lü Bu’s own insecurity lead into the 袁绍刺吕布未遂.
