Overview

张鱼 / 张于 / Zhang Yu now has two bounded Qiang-frontier layers. Hanji 756 presents him as the Longxi official who releases Hao Wu because withdrawal is worth more than killing one captured leader. Hanji 757 then presents him as the Qiang protector who defeats Mi Wu, receives surrender contact, and uses a poisoned banquet and ambush to kill Mi Wu and many Qiang leaders.

Current Profile

Hanji 756 backfills Zhang Yu before the poisoned-banquet layer. Hao Wu is captured after entering Longxi with a light force. Hao Wu tells Zhang Yu that killing him will not weaken the Qiang, while releasing him will let him disperse the attacking groups. Zhang Yu accepts the bargain, Hao Wu returns, the Qiang forces disperse, and Mi Wu withdraws north of the Yellow River.

Hanji 757 then places Zhang Yu in emergency replacement. Emperor Zhang is alarmed by Fu Yu’s death and appoints Zhang Yu from Longxi to the Qiang-protector post. Zhang Yu leads ten thousand Han troops to garrison Linqiang while the frontier situation remains unsettled.

The decisive Hanji 757 episode begins after Mi Wu again unites Qiang forces and attacks Jincheng fortifications. Zhang Yu sends a subordinate force to fight in Mucheng Valley, and Mi Wu is defeated. Mi Wu then sends an interpreter-envoy to request surrender and comes to Linqiang with his commanders.

Zhang Yu turns that surrender setting into revenge. He holds a banquet, poisons the wine, uses hidden troops, kills Mi Wu and a reported eight hundred-plus Qiang leaders, and cuts off Mi Wu’s head to sacrifice at Fu Yu’s grave. He then attacks the remnants, but Mi Tang rebuilds a broader coalition through marriages and hostages. The current synthesis therefore treats Zhang Yu as a figure of sharp contrast: he can use tactical restraint when cooperation is credible, but he later destroys surrender trust through revenge.

Key Characteristics

  • Longxi frontier official whose early source layer uses captive release as a practical pacification tool.
  • Emergency successor to Fu Yu as Protector of the Qiang.
  • Frontier commander who restores battlefield initiative after Fu Yu’s death.
  • Uses surrender contact and banquet hospitality as a killing opportunity.
  • Gains revenge but fails to settle the Qiang problem.
  • Source-bounded route preserving Hanji 756’s 张鱼 and Hanji 757’s 张于 spellings.

Evidence

  • Captive-release calculation: Hanji 756 says Hao Wu argues that killing him will not damage the Qiang, while releasing him can stop the attack.
  • Temporary pacification: Hanji 756 says Zhang Yu releases Hao Wu, after which Hao Wu disperses the Qiang troops and Mi Wu withdraws north of the Yellow River.
  • Appointment: Hanji 757 says Zhangdi appoints Longxi administrator Zhang Yu after Fu Yu’s death.
  • Linqiang garrison: Hanji 757 says Zhang Yu leads ten thousand Han troops to Linqiang.
  • Surrender setting: Hanji 757 says Mi Wu requests surrender after defeat and comes to Linqiang with his leaders.
  • Banquet killing: Hanji 757 says Zhang Yu poisons the banquet, uses ambush troops, kills Mi Wu and many leaders, and offers Mi Wu’s head at Fu Yu’s grave.
  • Settlement failure: Hanji 757 says Mi Tang later reconciles groups, creates marriage and hostage ties, and remains too strong for Zhang Yu to subdue quickly.

Qualifications

This page remains bounded to Hanji 756 and Hanji 757. It treats the source spellings 张鱼 and 张于 as cautiously aligned because both refer to a Longxi/Qiang-frontier Zhang Yu in adjacent episodes, but the exact character normalization remains source-scoped. The Hanji 757 subordinate called Sima Fang is still not linked to the later Sima Fang page because the chronology and context are different enough to require caution. The page treats Zhang Yu as a Qiang-frontier trust and coercion case, not a complete biography.

What Changed

  • Added Hanji 756 as Zhang Yu’s earlier captive-release and temporary-pacification layer.
  • Reframed Zhang Yu around contrast: usable forbearance toward Hao Wu, then destructive surrender-trust breach toward Mi Wu.

Relationships

  • 浩武 - captured Qiang leader whom Zhang Yu releases to disperse the rebel force.
  • 富裕 - predecessor whose death Zhang Yu later avenges.
  • 弥务 / 迷雾 - Qiang leader whose withdrawal follows Hao Wu’s release and whom Zhang Yu later kills after surrender contact.
  • 弥唐 - successor whose coalition shows the limits of Zhang Yu’s violent settlement.
  • 退让留余地式治理 - positive early pattern in which release preserves withdrawal and reduces immediate fighting.
  • 受降失信 - negative later pattern created by Zhang Yu’s banquet killing.
  • 保护换信任式边疆安抚 - later contrast because Deng Xun rebuilds frontier trust after prior bad faith.
  • 烧当羌 - frontier group field in which the episodes occur.
