赵苞 / 赵包 / Zhao Bao (Late Han)
赵苞 / 赵包 / Zhao Bao (Late Han) enters the wiki through Hanji 910 as the Liaoxi commandery administrator whose family becomes 鲜卑 leverage in 177 CE. The source transcript renders him as 赵包; this page uses a disambiguated late-Han title because the source’s Liaoxi hostage account is separate from the Warring States 赵豹 / 平阳君 page.
After taking office, Zhao Bao sends for his mother and wife, but Xianbei forces capture them near Liucheng. 檀石槐 places Zhao Bao’s mother in front of the army and tries to make Zhao Bao’s public duty collapse under family attachment.
The source makes the case morally unresolved rather than simply heroic. Zhao Bao says he is both his mother’s son and the court’s minister, and his mother tells him not to lose righteousness for her sake. He attacks and defeats the Xianbei, but his mother and wife are killed; 汉灵帝 sends condolences and grants him a marquisate, yet Zhao Bao buries his family, accuses himself of surviving at their cost, vomits blood, and dies.
The wiki role of Zhao Bao’s page is to add a frontier official version of 忠义牵连困境. Unlike cases where hostage coercion fails because the target can reframe kinship or the hostage removes themselves, Zhao Bao wins the battle while losing the family members whose capture created the dilemma.
