赵德昭 / Zhao Dezhao

Zhao Dezhao / 赵德昭 is 赵匡胤 / 宋太祖’s son and a key alternative heir in 170.宋太祖之死:烛影斧声,阴谋论中的人性谜团(下). The episode presents him as politically dangerous to 赵光义 / 宋太宗 because Taizong’s legitimacy depended on explaining why the throne bypassed Taizu’s sons.

His crisis comes after Taizong’s failed northern campaign. The episode says that when the army lost track of Taizong, some soldiers considered supporting Zhao Dezhao; later, when Dezhao asked about rewards, Taizong rebuked him with the implication that he could distribute rewards after becoming emperor. Dezhao then died by suicide.

For the source, Dezhao’s death is one of the events that keeps 烛影斧声 from being only a one-night rumor. It belongs to a sequence in which alternative lines produced by the 金匮之盟 logic become politically intolerable.
