赵括 / Zhao Kuo enters this wiki through 《资治通鉴·周纪》93丨在梦里藏着偷天改命？（2） as the later 赵国 commander associated with 长平之战. This episode does not yet narrate his command decisions; it only mentions him in the tradition that 冯亭 later followed Zhao Kuo in the battle and died there.

《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起，长平之战中的“草包”名将？（1） makes Zhao Kuo central rather than merely prospective. After 范雎 spreads the claim that Qin does not fear 廉颇 but does fear Zhao Kuo, 赵丹 / 赵孝成王 appoints Zhao Kuo to replace Lian Po at the front. The episode treats that appointment as enemy-aided wishful thinking, not as evidence that Qin truly fears him.
The source also gives three independent warnings about Zhao Kuo. 蔺相如 says appointing him by reputation is like “胶柱鼓瑟”; 赵奢 had earlier warned that his son treats war too lightly despite being able to debate military theory; and 赵母 argues from command character, noting his arrogance, private accumulation, and failure to share rewards and hardship with soldiers. Zhao Kuo changes the army’s dispositions after taking command and attacks across the Dan River, but because he does not know Bai Qi is the true opposing commander, he reads Qin’s retreat as opportunity rather than lure. Once Qin’s barriers stop his forward movement and the side forces cut his rear, Zhao Kuo’s main force is trapped without food or support.
《资治通鉴·周纪》94丨杀神白起，长平之战中的“草包”名将？（3） gives Zhao Kuo’s final battlefield action. After forty-six days of starvation, he divides the remaining army into four groups for repeated breakout attempts and personally leads the strongest assault. Qin refuses close combat, uses strong crossbows, and Zhao Kuo is killed by arrows; his death triggers the army’s collapse and surrender to 白起.
The episode therefore turns Zhao Kuo from a warning about reputation-based appointment into the terminal case for 纸上谈兵式统帅陷阱. His final courage does not repair the strategic error: abandoning 廉颇’s patient defense has already placed the army inside 战场围困与断粮.
