赵良 / Zhao Liang

赵良 / Zhao Liang appears in 《资治通鉴·周纪》24丨商鞅曰:我咋裂了 as the figure whose advice to 公孙鞅 / 商鞅 is placed in flashback after Shang Yang’s death. The episode says 《资治通鉴》 moves this exchange out of simple chronology so the reader sees it as a possible warning that went unheeded.

《资治通鉴·周纪》25丨赵良对商鞅说:你不配 completes Zhao Liang’s argument. He first secures permission for frank speech through the proverb about one direct critic being worth more than many compliant assenters, turning the exchange into a case of 礼仪化直言. Once allowed to speak, he rejects Shang Yang’s self-comparison to 百里奚.

Zhao Liang’s comparison has three layers. Baili Xi is remembered as appointed openly by 秦穆公, useful to Qin, modest in personal style, and mourned by ordinary Qin people. Shang Yang, by contrast, is said to have entered through a favorite’s channel, ruled harshly over nobles and commoners, and created enemies through punishments such as 公子虔’s suffering, Zhu Huan’s death, and Gongsun Jia’s face tattoo.

His main warning is not only moral. By contrasting Baili Xi’s unguarded travel with Shang Yang’s armed-security dependence, Zhao Liang turns “得人者兴,失人者崩” into 民心型政治安全. He names Shang Yang’s position “危若朝露”: while 秦孝公 lives, the danger is hidden, but once that single shield disappears the stored resentment can collapse into revenge.

The episode also notes that 《史记》 gives Zhao Liang a fuller proposed exit: return 商於, retire from office, and sponsor more benevolent policies before leaving. The host doubts this would have been enough, which keeps Zhao Liang’s speech inside the wiki’s broader 权力退场困境 rather than making it a simple missed solution.
