赵兴 / Zhao Xing (Nanyue)
Updated · 3 episodes · 1 show · 3 source notes
Overview
赵兴 / Zhao Xing is the son and designated heir of 赵婴齐 and the Han-born 樛太后. As fourth king of 南越, he joins his mother in requesting interior-vassal-style integration with Han, but cannot overcome chancellor 吕嘉; his death in Lü Jia’s coup turns negotiated integration into dynastic rupture and war.
Current Profile
Hanji 349-2 says Zhao Yingqi asks the Han court to recognize Lady Jiu as queen and Zhao Xing as heir. When Zhao Yingqi dies, Zhao Xing succeeds. The arrangement gives 汉武帝 a succession channel but does not itself transfer effective authority.
Hanji 351 makes Zhao Xing’s policy concrete. After the Han mission arrives, he and his mother request triennial court attendance, removal of border barriers, Han-issued seals, adoption of Han law, and continued envoy presence. Wudi approves while leaving Zhao Xing discretion over officials below the senior offices, combining central integration with retained royal appointment power.
Hanji 352-1 places Zhao Xing between that policy and Lü Jia’s local power. At a banquet intended to confront Lü Jia, the Han envoys hesitate and Zhao Xing stops his mother from attacking directly. After a two-thousand-person Han force enters Nanyue, Lü Jia depicts the king as captured by his Han-born mother and foreign envoys, kills the royal party, and installs 赵建德. The host’s “indecision” judgment is a counterfactual interpretation, not proof that killing Lü Jia would have preserved Zhao Xing’s rule.
Key Characteristics
- Court-recognized heir of Zhao Yingqi and Queen Dowager Jiu.
- Fourth Nanyue king after his father’s death.
- Co-petitioner for closer ritual, border, legal, and administrative integration with Han.
- Ruler retaining some appointment authority inside the proposed integrated arrangement.
- Monarch whose authority does not neutralize Lü Jia’s local family power.
- King killed and replaced during Lü Jia’s coup.
Evidence
- Designation and accession: Hanji 349-2 says Zhao Yingqi requests Zhao Xing’s recognition as heir and that he later succeeds.
- Concrete integration request: Hanji 351 says the royal party requests interior-vassal treatment and Zhao Xing retains appointment of remaining officials after Han grants senior seals.
- Confrontation, death, and replacement: Hanji 352-1 describes the failed banquet, Lü Jia’s mobilization, Zhao Xing’s death, and Zhao Jiande’s installation.
Qualifications
The profile is bounded to three popular-history summaries. They do not reconstruct Zhao Xing’s age, independent policy formation, full court coalition, or personal role in drafting the request. Imperial approval does not prove the border, legal, and resident-envoy measures were durably implemented. “Indecision” is the host’s moral interpretation; the evidence does not show that killing Lü Jia was operationally feasible or would have produced peaceful incorporation.
What Changed
- Added the concrete interior-vassal-style package requested under Zhao Xing.
- Distinguished retained lower-level appointment authority from full direct Han administration.
- Connected the later coup to resistance against an approved but contested integration program.
Relationships
- 赵婴齐 - father who requests his recognition as heir.
- 樛太后 - mother and co-advocate of closer Han incorporation.
- 安国少季 - Han envoy in the mission preceding the integration request.
- 吕嘉 - chancellor who blocks the royal policy, kills Zhao Xing, and replaces him.
- 赵建德 - successor installed by Lü Jia after the coup.
- 南越 - kingdom whose divided authority constrains Zhao Xing’s rule.
- 汉武帝 - external ruler who recognizes the succession and approves the request.
