Hanji 746 introduces Zheng Zhong after Fan Qiang rescues Geng Gong and the remaining defenders fight their way back east. By the time they reach Yumen, only thirteen of the original twenty-six defenders are still alive.

Zheng Zhong’s first response is practical care: he has them bathe, changes their clothes and caps, and hears their account. His second response is institutional memory. He sends a memorial arguing that Geng Gong and the surviving soldiers held an isolated city with tiny numbers against a much larger Xiongnu force, preserved Han honor, and deserved rank as an example to commanders.

The court outcome gives the memorial force. After Geng Gong reaches Luoyang, he is appointed cavalry commandant. Zheng Zhong therefore functions in this source as the officer who turns suffering that could have remained frontier rumor into a recorded merit claim.
