钟离眜 / Zhongli Mo enters the wiki through Hanji 160 part 1 as one of the few upright, loyal figures 陈平 says remain close to 项羽. The episode groups him with 范增, 龙且, and 周殷 as the trusted Chu core that Han must alienate rather than defeat only by open attack.
The source makes Zhongli Mo the first named target of Chen Ping’s 反间流言楔入. Chen Ping’s agents spread the claim that Zhongli Mo has long commanded for Xiang Yu and made great contributions without receiving a kingship, so he and other Chu generals want to join 刘邦, destroy the Xiang clan, divide the land, and become kings themselves. Xiang Yu does not immediately kill him in the episode, but the source says trust is damaged.

Hanji 172 makes Zhongli Mo the immediate trigger of Han Xin’s fall. Han Xin cannot comfortably hand him over without appearing to sell a friend, but continued shelter deepens Liu Bang’s suspicion. When Han Xin hesitates and explains the situation, Zhongli Mo argues that Han has not attacked only because his presence makes Han Xin harder to handle; if Han Xin kills him to seek pardon, Han Xin will soon be destroyed too. Zhongli Mo then kills himself, and Han Xin’s presentation of his head becomes the opening for arrest rather than protection.
