周进 is the aging failed scholar whose humiliation and later rise prepare [[FanJin|范进]]’s story in [[RulinWaishi|《儒林外史》]]. In 58.儒林外史：假如考公成了唯一出路, the hosts emphasize his low status as an old tongsheng, his dependence on teaching for survival, and his public embarrassment by younger degree-holders and higher-status scholars.

The turning point is Zhou Jin’s collapse in the examination compound, where he bangs against the boards, cries, vomits blood, and is then financially rescued by merchants who buy him a route into further examination. Once he passes and becomes Guangdong xuedao, he controls other candidates’ futures. The episode uses that reversal to show Imperial Examination As Only Exit as a loop: the institution humiliates people, then turns some survivors into sympathetic but still system-preserving gatekeepers.
