猪八戒

猪八戒 is reread in 43.西游记：咄！你是什么妖精！ against the simple story that he was a heavenly marshal accidentally reborn as a pig. The episode points to his own account of body, memory, and heavenly misconduct to suggest that his pig identity may be older than his face-saving explanation admits.

The source also uses 《西游妖物志》 to place 猪八戒 in a longer source history. Unlike 孙悟空, 沙和尚, and the white horse, 猪八戒 appears later in the取经 lineage; the episode links him to Yuan material, Marici’s pig-associated imagery, and comic demotion from a higher religious or mythic background.
