猪八戒

猪八戒 is reread in 43.西游记:咄!你是什么妖精! against the simple story that he was a heavenly marshal accidentally reborn as a pig. The episode points to his own account of body, memory, and heavenly misconduct to suggest that his pig identity may be older than his face-saving explanation admits.

The source also uses 《西游妖物志》 to place 猪八戒 in a longer source history. Unlike 孙悟空, 沙和尚, and the white horse, 猪八戒 appears later in the取经 lineage; the episode links him to Yuan material, Marici’s pig-associated imagery, and comic demotion from a higher religious or mythic background.

Connections

 • 《西游记》 - central text.
 • 孙悟空 and 沙和尚 - companion figures with different source-lineage profiles.
 • 《西游妖物志》 - secondary guide used by the episode for character origins.
 • Mythic Source Layering - concept for religious and folk source accumulation.
 • Accretive Text Formation - broader reason the team can change across versions.
