朱博 / Zhu Bo (Western Han)
Updated · 5 episodes · 1 show · 5 source notes
Overview
朱博 / Zhu Bo is synthesized as a late Western Han official whose rise and fall both turn office procedure into power politics. Hanji 577 now supplies the earliest title-service layer: after becoming Jingzhao Yin, Zhu Bo works with 傅晏 to push 傅太后’s title demand and attack 孔光 and 傅喜 as self-protective or factional. Hanji 578 shows him as Da Sikong proposing restoration of the Yushi Dafu office, giving 汉哀帝 an institutional way to reset promotion sequence and place 丁明 in the Da Sima field. Hanji 579 shows the next stage: Zhu Bo becomes chancellor, is immediately attacked through “鼓妖” omen interpretation as too forceful for that office, completes Fu Taihou’s title settlement, and joins 赵璇 in punishing 施丹. Hanji 580 adds two follow-ups: Zhu Bo and Zhao Xuan try unsuccessfully to strip 王莽 of title and fief, and Zhu Bo then persuades Aidi to abolish州牧 and restore刺史 because high provincial rank has weakened oversight incentives. Hanji 582 then shows him as chancellor caught between formal court responsibility and Fu Taihou’s private anger at Fu Xi, where tactical cleverness fails once an impeachment memorial is legible as patron-driven revenge.
Current Profile
Hanji 577 gives Zhu Bo’s first current Aidi-era personnel role. After becoming Jingzhao Yin, he cooperates with Fu Yan and repeatedly speaks to Aidi about Fu Taihou’s title demand. Their accusation channel is tactically useful: Kong Guang is described as only trying to preserve himself, while Fu Xi is described as forming a faction and failing to help government. The page therefore now treats Zhu Bo as part of 官场逆淘汰 before his later office-design and chancellorship episodes.
Hanji 578 gives Zhu Bo an institutional-design role. As Da Sikong, he argues that abolishing the Yushi Dafu office has left officials uncertain about responsibility and rank. His solution is to restore Yushi Dafu as a promotion bridge: capable local and commandery officials can be tested, raised to two-thousand-stone status, considered for Yushi Dafu, and then become plausible chancellor candidates. Zhu Bo also says he is willing to be moved down into the restored post, which the episode reads as a tactical route toward the chancellor line rather than mere self-demotion.
The same source makes Zhu Bo part of a broader personnel reset. Aidi accepts the recommendation, makes Zhu Bo Yushi Dafu, and appoints Ding Ming as Da Sima Wei General with subordinate officials. Zhu Bo later joins Fu Taihou-aligned officials in attacking 孔光, whose earlier succession advice and anti-Fu position make him vulnerable. This layer ties Zhu Bo to 官职序列重组式权力再分配 before his later collapse.
Hanji 579 supplies the immediate chancellorship layer. Aidi appoints Zhu Bo chancellor and Zhao Xuan Yushi Dafu after both have supported Fu Taihou’s title side. When the palace sound occurs as they are about to receive appointment documents, Li Xun and Yang Xiong turn it into an omen-coded personnel critique. Yang Xiong’s version is especially pointed: Zhu Bo is forceful and tactical enough for command, but the chancellor must harmonize interests and coordinate a larger field. Aidi ignores the warning.
The same source then shows Zhu Bo’s program succeeding. Aidi accepts his advice and formalizes the Dingtao-line title settlement, giving Fu Taihou the status she had sought. Zhu Bo and Zhao Xuan then memorialize against Shi Dan for having attacked Dong Hong’s earlier title proposal; Aidi approves Shi Dan’s reduction. This layer makes Zhu Bo’s chancellorship both the target of omen-coded critique and the instrument of title-politics cleanup.
Hanji 580 adds Zhu Bo’s next institutional and factional moves. He and Zhao Xuan argue that Wang Mang’s earlier Da Sima status makes his opposition to Aidi’s filial-title settlement especially serious, but Aidi refuses to reduce Wang Mang to commoner status because Wang Zhengjun remains Wang Mang’s protective patron. Zhu Bo then turns to provincial oversight, arguing that州牧 have become too high-ranking and self-protective to serve the sharper inspection function that lower-status刺史 once performed; Aidi accepts the reversal.
Hanji 582 says Zhu Bo is approached through Kongxiang Hou after Fu Taihou remains dissatisfied with Fu Xi’s existing punishment. Zhu Bo consults Zhao Xuan, who warns that Aidi has already settled the matter and that reopening it is improper, but Zhu Bo says he has already promised Kongxiang Hou and will act for Fu Taihou even at risk.
His chosen tactic is not open defiance. Zhu Bo tries to reduce exposure by bundling Fu Xi with 何武, another dismissed senior official who still retains rank and fief. The design is to make the memorial look like a general rule about former officials rather than a targeted strike against Fu Xi.
The strategy fails because Aidi already knows Fu Taihou’s resentment. Zhao Xuan confesses under inquiry, 彭宣 and central officials review the case, and the court classifies Zhu Bo, Zhao Xuan, and Kongxiang Hou as guilty of grave disrespect. Zhao Xuan and Kongxiang Hou receive lesser outcomes, while Zhu Bo is summoned to Tingwei custody and commits suicide. His case therefore sits near 朝廷合法性优先于恩主忠诚: serving the patron’s will becomes indefensible once the ruler reads the hidden intent.
Key Characteristics
- Western Han senior official who moves from Da Sikong to restored Yushi Dafu and then chancellor under Han Aidi.
- Early title-service actor who works with Fu Yan to accuse Kong Guang and Fu Xi while advancing Fu Taihou’s demand.
- Uses office-restoration argument to define a promotion route toward chancellorship, then becomes the target of a “鼓妖” critique that his forceful temperament is poorly suited to that office.
- Helps complete Fu Taihou’s Dingtao-line title settlement, participates in the personnel pressure against Kong Guang, and attacks Shi Dan for earlier opposition.
- Fails to strip Wang Mang’s title and fief because Wang Zhengjun’s patronage limits the purge, then reverses the州牧 reform by arguing that high provincial rank weakens inspection incentives.
- Agrees to pursue Fu Taihou’s demand for harsher punishment of Fu Xi and uses He Wu as a bundled comparison target, but misjudges Aidi’s ability to infer the backchannel.
- Becomes the most severe casualty of the Fu Xi case, committing suicide when summoned for trial.

Qualifications
The page is bounded to Hanji 577, Hanji 578, Hanji 579, Hanji 580, and Hanji 582. Hanji 577 supports Zhu Bo’s cooperation with Fu Yan, title-service role, and accusations against Kong Guang and Fu Xi, but not his private motive or complete Jingzhao Yin tenure. Hanji 578 supports Zhu Bo’s office-restoration proposal and participation in Kong Guang’s removal, but not a full San Gong institutional history or Zhu Bo’s private motive. Hanji 579 supports his chancellorship, omen-coded criticism, title-settlement role, and Shi Dan attack, but not the physical cause of the palace sound or Dong Hong’s full original proposal. Hanji 580 supports the failed Wang Mang attack and州牧-to-刺史 reversal, but not the full provincial-office history or Zhao Xuan’s wider role. Hanji 582 supports Zhu Bo’s role in the Fu Xi impeachment attempt, his bundling tactic, and his suicide, but not a full biography, Zhao Xuan’s full confession text, or the precise legal formula behind the charges.
What Changed
- Added Hanji 577’s earlier title-service and accusation layer before Zhu Bo’s formal office-design role.
- Connected Zhu Bo to 官场逆淘汰 because his accusations make resistance to Fu Taihou look like selfishness or faction.
- Added Hanji 580’s failed anti-Wang-Mang memorial and州牧-to-刺史 reversal between Hanji 578 and Hanji 582.
- Added Hanji 579’s chancellorship, “鼓妖” critique, title-settlement, and Shi Dan punishment layers.
- Reframed Zhu Bo as a figure whose tactical use of formal procedure and patron service advances him, lets him reshape oversight incentives, and later destroys him.
