Overview

朱买臣 / Zhu Maichen is a Western Han official who moves from a humiliated subordinate and aggrieved beneficiary of 严助 into the principal architect of the three-clerk counterattack against 张汤. Zhang later names him in the final accusation that precedes Zhu’s execution.

Current Profile

Hanji 339-1 says Zhu, 王朝, and 边通 were once senior officials before Zhang’s rapid promotion and later endured repeated humiliation under him. When Zhang presses a knowing-nonreporting case against Chancellor 庄青翟, they join Zhuang both from resentment and because they fear becoming Zhang’s next targets.

Zhu’s deepest personal grievance is attributed to Yan Zhu’s death. Yan had recommended the struggling Zhu Maichen to 汉武帝, but Zhang allegedly insisted on Yan’s execution after the Huainan case despite the emperor’s reluctance. Zhu then watches Zhang for misconduct and selects merchant 田信 as the route for alleging policy leakage, official-commercial collusion, and private profit. The incomplete transcript preserves the construction of the charge but not proof of its claims.

Hanji 339-2 supplies the reversal. Zhang’s final letter identifies Zhu and the other two clerks as those who caused his death. After Zhang’s estate and his mother’s sparse funeral alter the emperor’s reading, all three are executed and associated with Zhuang.

Key Characteristics

  • Western Han official and one of three chief clerks opposing Zhang Tang.
  • Joins Zhuang Qingdi under a combination of shared threat and accumulated humiliation.
  • Holds a personal grievance over the execution of benefactor Yan Zhu.
  • Selects Tian Xin as the bridge for constructing an allegation against Zhang.
  • Named in Zhang’s final written accusation.
  • Executed after Han Wudi reopens the case.

Evidence

Coalition and accusation design:

  • Hanji 339-1 says Zhu joins Wang, Bian, and Zhuang against Zhang, links his own hostility to Yan Zhu’s execution, and develops the Tian Xin allegation.

Final accusation and punishment:

  • Hanji 339-2 names Zhu Maichen with Wang Chao and Bian Tong in Zhang’s final letter and says the emperor later has the three executed.

Qualifications

The sources still do not reconstruct Zhu’s wider career or an independent case file. Hanji 339-1’s claims about humiliation, self-protection, Yan Zhu, Tian Xin, leakage, bribery, and collusion remain episode-attributed, and the transcript ends before the accusation is complete. Coalition activity is clearer than adjudicated guilt; Hanji 339-2 does not independently supply the clerks’ exact acts or legal charges.

What Changed

  • Added Zhu’s role as coalition organizer and designer of the Tian Xin accusation.
  • Added Yan Zhu’s execution as a personal grievance distinct from shared self-protection.
