朱鲔 / Zhu Wei (Eastern Han)
Updated · 1 episodes · 1 show · 1 source notes
Overview
朱鲔 / Zhu Wei is a former Gengshi-aligned Luoyang defender whose surrender becomes an early test of Liu Xiu’s founding clemency. Hanji 679 presents him as personally exposed because he had joined Liu Yan’s killing and opposed Liu Xiu’s northern mission, yet Liu Xiu chooses unification and credibility over revenge. Zhu Wei’s submission helps deliver Luoyang and makes a former enemy’s survival part of the new regime’s public trust.
Current Profile
Zhu Wei holds Luoyang for Liu Xuan’s side after Liu Xiu has founded a new order. His refusal to surrender is rooted in fear rather than simple military confidence: he expects Liu Xiu to avenge Liu Yan and remembers that he had argued against sending Xiao Wang / Liu Xiu north.
The surrender depends on two trust devices. Liu Xiu gives a public promise to preserve Zhu Wei’s office and title, swearing by the Yellow River that he will not break faith. Cen Peng, once Zhu Wei’s subordinate, carries the message; Zhu Wei tests him by lowering a rope from the city wall and asking whether Cen Peng dares to climb it.
After the test, Zhu Wei binds himself and goes to Liu Xiu. Liu Xiu personally unbinds him, sends him back to Luoyang overnight, and receives Zhu Wei, Su Mao, and the army’s surrender the next day. The source says Zhu Wei is appointed Pingdi General and Fugou Marquis, later serves as Shaofu, and leaves a hereditary title, so the episode’s answer to why he “ends well” is that Liu Xiu treats credible surrender as more valuable than private vengeance.
Key Characteristics
- Luoyang holdout whose surrender transfers a major capital base to Liu Xiu.
- High-risk former enemy because his past conduct touches Liu Yan’s death and Liu Xiu’s earlier political survival.
- Trust-test actor who requires both Liu Xiu’s oath and Cen Peng’s personal risk before submitting.
- Surrender-cascade figure whose return to Luoyang makes the next day’s army submission possible.
- Incorporated former opponent whose survival, office, and title turn clemency into a founding signal.
Evidence
- Fear of revenge: Hanji 679 says Zhu Wei hesitates because he joined Liu Yan’s killing and had advised Liu Xuan not to send Liu Xiu north.
- Survival guarantee: Hanji 679 says Liu Xiu promises to preserve Zhu Wei’s office and title and swears by the Yellow River.
- Intermediary test: Hanji 679 says Liu Xiu sends Cen Peng because he had served under Zhu Wei, and Zhu Wei tests him by lowering a rope from the city wall.
- Submission and return: Hanji 679 says Zhu Wei submits bound, Liu Xiu unbinds him, and then sends him back to Luoyang that night.
- Incorporation outcome: Hanji 679 says Zhu Wei and Su Mao surrender with the army, and that Zhu Wei receives office, marquisate, later Shaofu service, and hereditary title.
Qualifications
This page is bounded to Hanji 679. It does not reconstruct Zhu Wei’s full earlier Gengshi career or later Eastern Han office sequence beyond the episode’s summary. The title and office forms, Su Mao’s exact subordinate role, and Xiao Wang/Liu Xiu naming remain source-scoped. The evidence supports a credible-surrender reading, not a claim that Liu Xiu forgave every former enemy without constraint.
What Changed
- Created this page from Hanji 679’s Luoyang surrender and former-enemy clemency branch.
- Framed Zhu Wei as an early security-for-authority case rather than only as the man tied to Liu Yan’s death.
Relationships
- 光武帝刘秀 - ruler whose promise and oath make Zhu Wei’s survival credible enough for Luoyang to surrender.
- 岑彭 - former subordinate and intermediary whose willingness to enter by rope helps prove Liu Xiu’s good faith.
- 苏茂 - fellow surrender actor named with Zhu Wei in the Luoyang army submission.
- 更始帝刘玄 - former regime ruler under whom Zhu Wei’s Luoyang holdout remains politically tied.
- 洛阳 - capital site transferred through Zhu Wei’s surrender before Liu Xiu settles there.
- 交权换安全 - concept directly illustrated by Zhu Wei trading Luoyang and arms for survival and retained status.
- 赦免作为国家权力 - adjacent concept because Liu Xiu turns non-revenge into a state-building signal.
