祖郎 / Zu Lang (late Han)

祖郎 / Zu Lang (late Han) enters the wiki through Hanji 983 as a local strongman near 泾县 in 丹阳郡. He attacks 孙策 while Sun Ce is moving through the region, nearly killing him.

The source uses Zu Lang to show that Sun Ce’s Jiangdong entry was not a smooth family takeover. Local powerholders could resist an outside force associated with 袁术, so Sun Ce’s later growth depends on surviving local hostility before converting Danyang and Jiangdong resources into a base.

Hanji 1028 completes Zu Lang’s local-resistance arc. After Yuan Shu’s imperial claim drives Sun Ce into open separation, Yuan Shu gives Zu Lang a seal and tries to use him to mobilize 山越 forces against Sun Ce. Sun Ce captures Zu Lang at Lingyang, recalls the earlier saddle-cutting ambush, then releases and appoints him as 门下贼曹 rather than killing him. Zu Lang therefore becomes the first of the episode’s two cases for 降敌任用式立威.
